Also known as Africa’s Green Gold, Verdite is particularly prized by artists for its rich, deep emerald colour, swirling striations and hardness rivalling that of rubies. Verdite occurs amongst the oldest rock in the world dating back over 3.5 billion years. The only known deposits are found in areas where gold was first discovered in Africa. Verdite contains inclusions of ruby corundum, the second hardest mineral on earth next to diamond - between 7.0 and 9.0 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Sometimes also referred to as Ruby Verdite, it was declared a semi-precious stone by the British Geological Society in 1985.
